The four styrofoam aiplanes in this assortment are modeled after four legendary United States
military airplanes. These planes are - S-3A Viking, C-130E Hercules, Lockheed C-130E Hercules,
and the LTV Aerospace A-7. A short history of these airplanese is located below.

S-3A Viking
The original mission of the S-3A Viking was as an anti-submarine and air reconosance airplane.
It was originally deployed in February, 1974 to replace the Grumann S-2 Tracker, which was
a piston engine aircraft.
The S-3A Viking is a carrier based airplane, originally operating within carrier battle
groups. It is nicknamed the "Hoover" because the whine of its engines resembles the sound of a
vacuum cleaner.
The S-3A was the aircraft President George W Bush rode to the aircraft carrier USS Abraham
Lincoln to give his famous "Victory" speech after the Iraqi war action ceased.
Currently the S-3 ocean surface search, sea and ground attack and aircraft refueling. The
U S Nave plans to retire the planes in 2009.
C-130E Hercules
The C-130 is a military transport airplane which can fly at speeds up to 345 miles per hour.
It has a wingspan of 132 feet, seven inches and an overall length of ninety-seven feet, nine
inches. It stands thirty-eight feet, nine inches tall. Overall maximum takeoff weight is
155,000 pounds, including a 42,000 payload. It can fly at 19,000 feet with this payload.
It can operate off of dirt or paved airstrips, giving it a great deal of flexibility in
operations. The first C-130s were delivered to the military in 1956. The plane has gone
through numerous upgrades, but remains the workhorse for the military. The C-130J is the
latest one to enter service in 1999.
Its duties are numerous, including airdropping troops into hostile areas, carrying oversized
military supplies like helicopters, armored vehicles, palletized supplies, or airdropping
supplies. It is also used for aerial firefighting, polar mission re-supply, and weather
reconnaissance.
This amazingly versatile airplane has remained in production for over forty years, performing
many much needed duties for all branches of the military, and also some civilian uses. The
C-130 is truly one of America’s most important aircraft.
General Dynamics YF-16
The YF-16 was developed in response to the fact that during the Vietnam War US fighters were
not as maneuverable at transonic speeds as some enemy fighters and were at a disadvantage in
fight. Genereral Dynamics and Northrup were asked to developed new fighters based on criteria
set out by the US Air Force.
This General Dynamics fighter was developed in the early 1970’s, the initial prototype
introduced on December 13, 1973 at Fort Worth Texas. It was then taken to Edwards Air
Force Base in California for testing. Stabilator and fuel-control valve problems developed and
were fixed.
Northrup had built the YF-17 and these two planes were entered in a fly-off, the winner being
chosen by the military for production. The General Dynamics YF-16 won the competition and
became the chosen new fighter on January 15, 1975 and became the F-16
The F-16 was designated the "Flying Falcon" and was deployed as a fighter-bomber and was
used by the US Air Force as well as Isreal, Belgium, Norway, and Denmark. This was a new
lightweight fighter needed badly by the US Air Force and its allies.
Flying styrofoam gliders is a lot of fun, and this series allows you to learn about
the history of some important US war planes. Toy airplanes can be an important tool not
only teaching the basics of how airplanes fly, but can be used to teach some aspects of aviation
history. So flying foam gliders is not only fun, but instructive, too.
