Why Does An Airplane Fly?

Why Do Planes Fly? The science of flight is a fascinating
subject! Many conditions have to be met before an airplane will fly and
it took many men much experimentation to finally work out the theory of
flight and get an airplane into the air.
Understanding what makes a plane fly requires studying what forces act
on a plane in flight.
The theory of flight is explained by the forces of drag, lift, thrust
and gravity and how the airplane is affected by them.

The links below explain briefly the science of why a plane
flies. This is not meant to be a fully scientific or flawless depiction
of the principals involved. It is meant merely to help the modeler
understand the forces acting on the model plane and to assist in
building a better plane after these forces are understood. Daniel
Bernoulli's theory briefly discussed. Model aviation is easier if the
basic theory of flight is understood and the parts of the aircraft
which make flight possible. The same theory of flight which applies
to big aircraft applies to model aircraft.
